The effect of ozone bath therapy on the levels of Omentin-1 and VEGF in patients with diabetic foot

[Abstract] Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of ozone gas bath therapy in treating diabetic foot ulcers and explore its potential mechanisms. Methods Fifty patients with diabetic foot were randomly divided into two groups, with 25 patients in each group. The conventional group received relevant conventional treatments and therapies; the ozone group received additional ozone gas bath therapy on top of the conventional treatments. The changes in plasma omentin-1 levels and wound tissue VEGF expression before and after 14 days of treatment were detected using the ELISA method. Results The effective rate in the ozone group was 88%, which was higher than that in the conventional group (56%) (P < 0.05). After treatment, the plasma omentin-1 levels [(57.8 ± 5.2) pg/mg vs. (26.3 ± 1.9) pg/mg] and local wound tissue VEGF expression [(37.3 ± 6.0) pg/mg vs. (25.7 ± 2.6) pg/mg] in the ozone group were both higher than those in the conventional group (P < 0.05). Conclusion Adding ozone gas bath therapy to conventional treatments can improve the efficacy of treating diabetic foot ulcers. The potential mechanism may be related to its upregulation of omentin-1 and VEGF expression.
